How much do I need to earn or show to live, work or study legally in Latvia?
The updated rules of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) set different requirements depending on the profession and purpose of residence. This article explains and gives examples to help you avoid mistakes when submitting your documents.
General rules for the work permit
From 2025, the minimum income is calculated on the basis of the average wage in the sector:
– If the average salary in the sector exceeds the national average (€1,537 gross in 2024),
you must prove an income of at least €1,537 per month.
– If the salary in the sector is less than €1,537,
at least 50% of the national average wage, i.e. €768.50 per month.
Examples:
– Software developer
In the IT industry, salaries often exceed €3000. Therefore, even at a lower salary, you need to prove at least €1537 per month.
– Warehouse worker
If the salary in your sector is around €1,100, €768.50 per month is enough.
For students
According to Cabinet Regulation No 656, students need to prove that they have at least €740 per month.
Annual amount:
€740 × 12 months = €8,880.
Possible evidence:
1) bank statement;
2) approval of the grant;
3) sponsors;
4) or a work contract (up to 20 h/week) with a salary of at least €740/month.
Formal employment allows you to keep the amount in your account unfrozen – proof of regular income is enough.
Summary: How much is needed?
| Category | Monthly income required |
| High-paid sectors | €1537 |
| Low-paid sectors | 768,50 euro |
| Students | 740 euros |
Why is this important?
Proof of your financial situation is mandatory for obtaining and renewing a residence permit. Incorrect calculations or lack of documentation can lead to refusals or delays.
